Does sand make glass?

2 Answers

Glass is made from liquid sand. You can make glass by heating ordinary sand (which is mostly made of silicon dioxide) until it melts and turns into a liquid. Sand melts at the incredibly high temperature of 1700°C (3090°F).

Silicon dioxide, or quartz in sand, is liquified and then cools and hardens into glass. sand melts at the 1700°C or 3090°F. Sometimes soda ash, or potash, are added to lower the melting point.
