Do squirrels carry rabies?

2 Answers

Although squirrels are capable of carrying rabies - they very infrequently do. One of the reasons that smaller animals like squirrels, along with rabbits and small rodents are not frequently seen with rabies is because they are highly unlikely to survive an attack by a rabid animal.

Small rodents like squirrels, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, chipmunks, rats, and mice and lagomorphs including rabbits and hares are almost never found to be infected with rabies and have not been known to transmit rabies to humans.
